During a residency at the St. Gregor Monastery in Steyl, I focused on the rituals and ceremonies of the Catholic religion. I am a big fan of these customs, which, with their smoke, robes, and echoing spaces, would not look out of place in a magic show. Just like with a magic trick, the spectator knows there is an explanation, but that does not take away the sense of magic. It is precisely that tension between wonder and reason, between believing and wanting to understand—somewhere there, for me, lies religion.
